Many homeowners hire a paving contractor without knowing what the process should look like. Understanding each step helps you verify you're getting a quality installation — not a quick, cheap job that'll fail within a few years.
Step 1: Demolition and Removal
For a full replacement, the existing driveway material is broken up and removed. We use skid steers and dump trucks to haul away the old asphalt. This step also gives us the opportunity to assess the subgrade condition and identify any drainage issues before they get paved over.
Step 2: Grading and Slope Planning
Proper slope is critical — water must drain away from your home, not pool in the center of your driveway. We grade the surface with precision equipment, creating the correct pitch to ensure long-term drainage performance. This is a step that's frequently done poorly on budget jobs, causing premature failure.
Step 3: Sub-Base Preparation
The sub-base is what your asphalt actually sits on, and it determines the lifespan of your entire driveway. We install a compacted gravel base — typically 6–8 inches of crushed stone — that distributes load evenly and prevents settling. Skipping or skimping on the base is the #1 cause of premature driveway failure.
Step 4: Binder and Surface Layer Installation
Hot mix asphalt is delivered fresh from the plant and laid immediately using a mechanical paver to ensure consistent thickness and smoothness. We typically install a binder layer followed by a finish surface layer — the combination provides both structural strength and a smooth, clean appearance.
Step 5: Compaction and Finishing
Immediately after laying, the asphalt is compacted with a heavy roller while still hot. Proper compaction eliminates air voids and creates the tight, durable surface that asphalt is known for. We then hand-finish the edges and clean up the site completely before the job is considered done.
